PSYC 236 - Global FreudThis course provides an introduction to Freud's thinking, especially on literary and cultural topics. Reading his writing in conjunction with literary texts from a variety of cultural backgrounds, we will focus on the ways in which authors, artists, musicians and film makers from around the world have used Freud's insights and try to determine in what ways his thoughts translate globally. Besides Freud's 1909 Clark lectures, we will read his writings on Oedipus, hysteria, repression, the uncanny, melancholia, religion and civilization. Alongside these works, we will read writings by such authors of world literature as Sophocles, Hoffmann, Jelinek, Puig and Mishima.
