Grants from foundations and corporations
provide important support to a broad spectrum of Clark programs and projects.
The University has been named a partner school in the
Davis United World Colleges (UWC) Scholars
Program, joining a prestigious list of colleges and universities
that receive scholarship support for students matriculating from Davis
United World Colleges high schools. As part of this program, Clark also
receives a $5,000 grant for use in Admissions outreach to recruit students
from UWC schools around the globe. Clark and the Davis Program share many
of the same values: Both embrace diversity, promote cultural literacy and
international understanding, and encourage students to be active citizens.
Davis UWC Scholars will enhance Clark’s
Experience Diverse Cultures signature by sharing with other Clark
students their cultural viewpoints and experiences at UWC schools.
Recruitment efforts are underway and we look forward to welcoming Davis UWC
Scholars to campus next fall.
Grants
from the Bank of America Charitable
Foundation, Inc. ($10,000) and the Amelia Peabody Foundation
($10,000) will support
Clark’s Neighborhood Music Program this year. This program, begun in 1996,
provides free music lessons to children in grades 3 through 12. Students
are introduced to classical music and music theory and take lessons on the
piano, clarinet, cello, flute, and violin. The program nurtures an
appreciation of music, extends academic learning and, most importantly,
teaches children skills that carry over into other areas of their lives.
Each year approximately 25 students are served by the program. Most
students stay with the program for several years; this is encouraged because
it allows them to advance beyond basic skills to proficiency in their chosen
instrument.
