Alumni news and notes (fall 2004)

Dear Clark Alumni,

A new academic year is well underway, and so are the activities of the Alumni Association. We started the year with a successful Alumni Communities Welcome Day on Aug. 5. Thank you to the hosts in our eight active communities for holding their Welcome Day gathering. This year, we hope to expand the Alumni Communities across the country, as well as internationally in Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul and Puerto Rico. If you are interested in participating in one of our current communities or starting one in your area, please contact me at flinsky@alumni.clarku.edu.

In August, I also welcomed the Class of 2008 to Clark. On Aug. 19, I went to Charlton, Mass., to meet the participants of Clark Trek (see story page 4). It was great to see so many energetic and enthusiastic new Clark students and future alumni. On Aug. 20, many alumni, staff and current students helped the Class of 2008 move into Wright and Bullock Halls. Clark is one of few schools whose move-in day involves alumni, many of whom take the day off from work to haul refrigerators and stereos to the third floor. The parents and students are always appreciative‹a nice first step in fostering a long and meaningful relationship with the University.

The Class of 2008 includes eight students who have come to Clark as part of the Global Scholars Program (GSP), a new scholarship initiative for international students. The GSP builds on Clark¹s long-standing commitment to fostering a multinational campus community and a curriculum that is global in view. The GSP is open to students who are not permanent residents or citizens of the United States, as well as U.S. citizens who live overseas and complete their entire secondary-school education outside of the United States. Chay Atupem '82, a member of the Alumni Association Executive Board, will be working closely with this program.

We continue to have wonderful attendance at our regional events at Clark and around the world. The second-annual Homecoming/CougarFest on Oct. 22 and 23 was very successful, and we now look forward to the new Alumni-in-Residence program on Nov. 10 and 11. Several alumni will add to the intellectual life of the University by teaching classes in their field of expertise, participating in career panels and meeting informally with students and faculty. Our early response from both alumni and faculty has been very encouraging.

We are moving forward aggressively in the area of technology. In the coming months, you will see new pages in our Alumni Online Community (www.clarku.edu/alumnicommunity) for online event registration, online giving and the Alumni Communities. We also want to make the best use of alumni Web pages. Please let us know what you want to see on these pages, what works and what improvements could be made to better interest you.

These and other projects would not be possible without your support, and I encourage you to get involved. Talk about Clark to a neighbor or friend, join the Alumni Admissions Program or mentor a current student. Get involved with the Clark Fund, and certainly join us for Reunion 2005 in May. Your efforts can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Faith Linsky '76
Alumni Association President

Alumni Admissions News

As usual, the Admissions Office has been busy with recruiting activities this fall. Each year, we find that prospective students are becoming more savvy in their college search process. They are asking more questions, searching the Web and seeking student and alumni perspectives. To stay updated about Clark and to see how prospective students are learning about the University, check out the following Web sites.

www.clarku.edu/clarkdiaries See what current students are doing for fun on campus. Four current students are profiled on this site. They update you weekly about their activities, providing important campus-life information that helps prospective students determine if Clark would be a good fit for their interests.

www.ctcl.com Clark is one of 40 colleges and universities featured in "Colleges That Change Lives" by Loren Pope. You can read more about the author's mission, the distinctive characteristics of the individual schools and their profiles on this Web site. Prospective students often read the chapter on Clark and decide to visit campus. Students who visit campus are very likely to apply to Clark.

www.clarku.edu/research In this section of our Web site, prospective students learn about the wide array of research and creative activities pursued by current students. It also helps students understand the intellectual rigor and academic opportunities at Clark.

www.clarku.edu/coursemap These Web pages help prospective students experience different courses and understand what "active learning" means at Clark. They see where current students begin in a course, where they end, and what and how they learn along the way. The pages feature interviews with faculty and students, syllabi and student projects.

Innovative and informative Web pages are crucial to our recruitment efforts, but so is the work of the Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) members. AAP members are covering approximately 90 college fairs this fall, hosting 20 Clark on the Road: Information Sessions and gearing up to interview applicants throughout the winter. There will be an Alumni Admissions training program on campus on Nov. 13, held in conjunction with our prospective student Preview Day. If you are interested in joining us or simply wish to have more information, please feel free to contact me at 508-793-7431 or tuber@clarku.edu.
