CLARK MEN’S BASKETBALL LIVE ON CHANNEL 3

The Clark University men’s basketball squad will get its 15 minutes of fame when it faces Babson College live on WCTR Channel 3 on Wednesday (7 p.m.). The game will be held at the Kneller Athletic Center.

“We’re excited to have some television time,” said head coach Paul W. Phillips. “Not only does it give us an opportunity to reach out to a broader audience, but it also allows others to see what Clark basketball is all about.”

After dropping three straight games, the Cougars (7-7, 1-2 NEWMAC) are looking to get back on track against an 8-6 (2-1 NEWMAC) Beaver squad, who lost only by six (59-53) to nationally ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute last Thursday. With history in its favor, however, the Clark men have posted an 11-4 series record over Babson since joining the conference in 1998. A year ago, the two teams split with Clark edging the Beavers (64-63) in Babson Park, Mass., and falling, 64-61, in Worcester.

Mark Alexander (12.8 ppg) will lead the Cougars offensively. The first-year forward from Providence, R.I., has been a welcome addition to the Clark line-up, posting eight double-digit scoring games. Sophomore Peter Normandin (10.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and junior Dominique Beck (9.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg) will also make a contribution.

The Beavers will be led by sophomore guard Zach Etten (15.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg).

An annual right of passage, the Cougars hopes this year’s broadcast will bring about better results. Last season, Clark fell to Williams College (77-69) in front of a crowd of 1,000 fans.

With students and staff back from the winter break, the Cougars are expecting a large crowd.

“We’re looking forward to an enthusiastic crowd and an exciting game,” Phillips said.

Tickets go on sale 45 minutes prior to the start of the game in the Kneller Athletic Center lobby. Prices are $4 for adults and $1 for non-Clark students. Clark students, faculty, staff, senior citizens and children under 12 get in free.

COUGAR SWIM AND DIVE TEAMS BACK IN ACTION

The Clark University men’s and women’s swim and dive teams showed no signs of rust after a six and five-week break, respectively, as they raced past UMass-Dartmouth in dual-meet action at Kneller Pool on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to their competitive break, the Cougars returned from their training trip in San Juan, Puerto Rico, just two days before last Saturday’s meet. However, the Clark men (4-2) downed UMD, 116-94, while the women (5-2) posted their fourth straight victory (118-98).

The Clark men placed first in six out of nine individual swimming events. Drew Jackson led the Cougars with three first place finishes. The sophomore swimmer claimed first in the 1,650-yard free (18:43.39), the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.63), and the 200-yard IM (2:10.72). Other top finishers for Clark included, Mike Smith in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.07), Jon Penney in the 100-yard free (54.96), and Tim O’Keefe in the 500-yard free (5:33.49).

On the women’s side, first-year Dana Akerfelds and sophomore Kayleigh Lagasse each won a pair of races to lead Clark. Akerfelds took first in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:03.26) and the 500-yard free (5:37.60), while Lagasse captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.19) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:27.90).

The Cougar swim and dive teams will travel to Brandeis University on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.).

CLARK LACROSSE DONATES TO A WORTHY CAUSE

The Clark University men’s lacrosse team has linked up with Americans Supporting Americans (ASA) to provide aid to United States troops in Iraq. The Cougars, who foster a unit in Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas, collected goods such as food, clothes, magazines and health care items, and mailed to Fort Anaconda over the holidays.

Evan Davis, Clark’s fifth-year head coach, learned about the program from a lacrosse convention in Baltimore, Md. “I’m excited about having the opportunity to give back to our troops,” said Davis. “A lot of the men and women in Iraq are the same age as some of the players on our team. They didn’t make it home for the holidays, and we just wanted to do something to make their days a little bit easier.”

According to Davis, the response from his players has been overwhelming. He hopes that his team’s efforts will make for a better day in the life of a soldier, but also that the two groups can form a bond unlike any other. That relationship has already begun to take form with the Cougars assuming the 135-soldier, 1st Cavalry Division motto, “Cav’s got your back.” The 2007 team’s slogan, “Cougars got your back,” is in support of each other and their adopted battalion.

The Cougars plan to continue supporting their fostered company until the troops come home. In the spring, the team will sell t-shirts to help off-set the cost of this initiative.

The first shipment went out on Wednesday, Dec. 20. If you would like to donate to this cause, please contact Coach Evan Davis at x7729.
