AKERFELDS MAKES A SPLASH FOR SWIM AND DIVE

Dana Akerfelds is making a name for herself on the Cougar swim and dive team. A native of Bronxville, N.Y., Akerfelds is having a fantastic freshman season highlighted by a Women’s Swimmer of the Meet runner-up nod at last weekend’s Worcester City Championship Meet. She captured three events (100-yard backstroke, 200-back, and 500-freestyle) and set a new meet record (500-free) to lead the Cougars to their second consecutive second place finish. Holy Cross captured the title, while WPI was third.

“I was hoping to do well, but I didn’t expect to get runner-up for women’s swimmer of the meet,” said Akerfelds, who chose to enroll at Clark over Holy Cross last year. “I was happy with my performance.”

While Clark has WPI to prepare for on Wednesday, Akerfelds, who owns a combined 16 first place victories this season, is looking forward to competing at her first-ever New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship meet in a couple of weeks. “I swam in big meets before, but it’ll be different this time around,” Akerfelds said. “Where I knew the swimmers and coach from Holy Cross, I’m a little nervous about NEWMAC’s because I don’t know much about my competition.”

“It’ll be interesting,” she said.

Both men’s and women’s swim and dive teams will be back in action for their final home meet against WPI on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.), where they will also honor the following seniors for their contribution to the program: Lauren Clement, Jessie Clements, Abby Crowley, Mackenzie Kamm, Kate Lied, Danielle Petroni, Sara Stephenson and Joe Page, the lone senior on the men’s squad.
