CLARK BASEBALL SET FOR HOME OPENER
Back from a Spring Week trip in Florida, the Clark University baseball team is set to host its home opener in a twinbill against Gordon College at Granger Field on Saturday. If Mother Nature cooperates, the opening pitch is scheduled for Noon.
After dropping five of its first six games in Florida, the Cougars (5-7) rebounded to post a 4-2 mark over the second half of the week. Winners of three straight, the club is ready to play on familiar turf. “Overall, I’m pleased with the team’s performance over Spring Week,” said eighth-year head coach Jason Falcon. “We gave a couple of games away earlier in the week, but responded well towards the end. “
“Anytime you can sweep a team at the start of the year, especially down South, that’s a pretty good feat,” he added.
Returning a roster that includes 21-lettermen and 11 seniors, Clark will face a young Gordon line-up that includes just four upperclassmen. The Fighting Scots, a member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, will also be playing in their first northern contest following Spring Break.
Despite Gordon’s youth, Falcon believes they are not a team to take lightly. “We have to come out and be sharp,” he said. “Our goal for Saturday is to play solid defense and continue our momentum from Florida. We want to take both games.”
Sophomore Matt Tillo (1-1, 3.45 ERA) and senior Mike Levy (2-1, 3.07 ERA) are penciled in on the mound for Clark. Both pitchers will be making their third starts of the year. Leading the Cougars at the plate is Joe Silva, who is batting .444 with a team-high 16 hits and seven RBI.

SOFTBALL AND LACROSSE RETURN FROM SPRING WEEK
The Clark University softball and lacrosse teams returned from their respective Spring Break trips this week. The Cougar softball squad, who posted a 4-6 Spring Week record, got early indications that despite 10-new players, the youthful squad is up for the challenge. Highlights included a two-game win streak to start the year and seven-run victories (8-1) against Rockford College (Ill.) and Salve Regina, where junior Heather Warren cracked a grand-slam homerun, her first of the season, a triple and six RBI. Clark will begin its New England slate at Springfield College next Saturday.
Clark lacrosse notched its first win of the season with an 8-4 victory over Cazenovia College in Hamilton, N.Y., over the break. Three first-year players scored goals for the Cougars, including five from Garrett McAdam, two from J.C. Tsagarakis, and a single goal from Nick Olear. First-year defender Tim Cole, whose performance merited the game ball, had seven groundballs and a key save late in the game. Cougar lacrosse will look to extend its win streak to two games against New England College on Thursday.
