Basketball Season Openers

The Clark men’s basketball squad split, while the women’s team dropped two games at their respective season opening tournaments last weekend.

At the Buffalo State College Coles Classic, the Cougar men fell to the host school 88-74 in their opening game. Sophomore Peter Normandin (Westminster, MA) led Clark with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior DJ Brinn (Madison, CT) chipped in 14 points, junior Pat Landers (Worcester, MA) had 11, and first-year Matt McLaughlin (Rochester, MA/Tabor Academy) had nine points and eight assists.

The Cougars rebounded to post a 96-61 victory over Fisher College in the consolation game. Sophomore Pat Ochoa (Springfield, MA) scored 15 points to lead CU. Ochoa was 3-for-5 from behind the arc. He had six rebounds and dished out three assists. Normandin, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 14 points, nine boards and five assists. Sophomore Byron Roberts (New Haven, CT) chipped in 12 points for the Cougars, and junior Dominique Beck (Brockton, MA) added 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The Clark women had its bid for 11 straight Worcester City Tournament titles dashed with a 60-50 season-opening loss to Nichols College last Friday. Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, MA) led Clark with her first collegiate double-double, 17 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Sophomore Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Me.) added 12 points. In the consolation match, the Cougars fell 50-45 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Named to the All-Tournament team, Roderigue paced all scorers with 16 points for the Cougars. Sophomore Sarah Hagstrom (Yarmouth, ME) led all players with five assists for Clark, while junior Katelyn Perry (Worcester, MA) topped the squad with seven rebounds.

Both teams will be on the road Tuesday night. The Clark men (1-1) will look to increase its winning streak to two games at Becker College (7 p.m.), while the Cougar women (0-2) hope to get into the win column at Johnson and Wales University (7 p.m.).

Cougar Hoops Home Opener

The Cougar hoop squads will open their respective home slates on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Kneller Athletic Center. The women’s team will face New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Connecticut College at 5:30 p.m. The men’s team will take on Worcester State College, a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) member, at 7:30 p.m.
