WINTER TEAMS PREPARE FOR SEMESTER BREAK TRIPS

The Cougar hoop squads will continue their competitive seasons at their respective winter break tournaments, while the Clark men’s and women’s swim and dive team will head to Puerto Rico for an intersession training trip.

The women’s basketball team will play the University of Southern Maine, ranked sixth in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, on Thursday, Dec. 28 and will face the College of Staten Island on Friday, Dec. 29 at the Land of Magic Classic in Orlando, Fla. “Both teams have very solid programs,” said head coach Pat Glispin. “Southern Maine is one of the premier programs in the country and Staten Island is another very strong team in the East region.” “It will be good competition for us.”

The men’s squad will make its second appearance in New York this season with a trip to the New York University Invitational, featuring Baruch College (N.Y.), Old Westbury College (N.Y.), and the host school NYU during the break. The Cougars will take on Baruch on Friday, Dec. 29 (8 p.m.) in the opening round. NYU will play Old Westbury in the other first round game at 6 p.m. The consolation game is at 2 p.m., while the championship match is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30. "It's always been a very good tournament," said head coach Paul Phillips. "We are taking it one game at a time. If we come out with a split we will be on course."

The Cougar swim and dive squad will ring in the New Year with an intersession training trip to Puerto Rico from January 2-11. Clark will pair up with a couple of New England teams as Babson College and Brandeis University will also be in the area. Not only do the three teams have New England as a connection, but head coach Paul E. Phillips, a former swimmer at Brandeis, has a bond with both rival coaches. “My coach at Brandeis is still there, so I’m looking forward to spending time with him and Babson’s coach is my mentor and good friend,” Phillips said. “Those are two programs we identify with very strongly; we share the same values. It should be a good time.”

According to Coach Phillips, the trip will give the team an opportunity to practice and train together. “Our practices are coordinated in a way that accommodates everyone’s class schedules,” said Phillips. “This trip really gives us a chance to come together as a team.”

WILSON NAMED TO NEWISA ALL-REGION TEAM

Clark University’s Amy Wilson has been named to the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-Region team.

Wilson, a third team selection, was the backbone of the Cougar defense this season. The senior tri-captain from Wilbraham, Mass., acted as one of the last lines of defense, clearing balls and making team saves in the clutch. Her defensive pressure helped Clark secure a pair of shutouts this fall and her offensive contribution with an assist against Coast Guard Academy aided the Cougars in a much-needed conference victory.

Wilson, who was also selected to play in the NEWISA senior bowl, capped her career with her first NEWMAC All-Conference second-team selection.
