TREMAINE LEADS COUGARS TO WORCESTER CITY TITLE
Graduate student Emily Tremaine raced to a first place finish to help the Clark University women’s cross country team capture the 2007 Worcester City Meet Championships at Moore State Park in Paxton, Mass. last Saturday.
Named the NEWMAC Runner of the Week, her efforts helped the Cougars earn just their second championship in 12 years – the team also claimed the title in 1995. The women placed three runners in the top five to win the championship with 27 points.
Tremaine, who sat out last season due to injury, crossed the finish line at 20:25 on the 5K course to claim the individual championship. “It was one of my goals at the beginning of the year to win the city meet,” Tremaine said. “It turned out great because our team won too. It could not have ended any better. It was a great last city meet.”
Entering Saturday’s meet, Tremaine knew her stiffest competition would be Meghan Woods from WPI, who placed second (20:35). “I knew it was going to be a duel between the two of us,” said the Spokane, Wash., native. “My plan was to go out strong and try to lose her. We ran together for about the first mile, but at the first hill I was able to pull away.”
Teammates Mary Martin (Auburn, Me.) and Ellen Durand (Billerica, Mass.) were right behind for the Cougars, finishing third (21:36) and fourth (21:40), respectively. Junior Kaitlyn Sephton (Shutesbury, Mass.) took ninth (22:48) and first-year Brooke Badon (Middlefield, Conn.) was 10th (22:56) to round out Clark’s top finishers.
