COUGAR VERSUS COUGAR IN SWIMMING DEBUT

Clark’s swimming and diving team dove into its 2008-09 campaign with a fierce competition with no one other than, each other. The Cougars held their annual Red versus Black inter-squad meet last Friday, where assistant coaches Tim Kelly and Krisztina Poda took over the helm guiding the Red and Black teams, respectively.

With the meet tied 311-all heading into the final event, the Black team of Cooper Hart, Jordan Heller, Samantha Helm and Dan Howard, the only veteran on the relay, captured the mixed 200-yard t-shirt relay. The win catapulted the black squad to its 10th overall victory and a slim 10-8 series advantage.

That night, seven meet records were broken, including first-year Erin Smith’s time in the 50-yard freestyle (26.29), where she eclipsed a 13-year old mark held by Rachel Lebow. It was previously the longest standing record on the inter-squad meet all-time list.

Other meet records were set by the following:

W 50 Free - Erin Smith, FR 26.29 (Rachel Lebow 26.69, 1995)

The Cougars open their traditional season with the Zarilli Relay Invitational at Brandeis University on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).

SPRING IN THE FALL

Clark’s baseball team concluded its fall ball season with a pair of close wins against Anna Maria College in two nine-inning games played on Sunday, Oct. 5th. The Cougars beat the Amcats, 3-2 and 11-8.

Five pitchers saw work in game one, including junior Jon Merritt and freshman Marcelo Peluffo, who both didn’t allow a hit in two innings and one inning of work, respectively. Senior David Gagnon earned the win in relief, surrendering just one hit and fanning one batter.

Offensively, newcomer Mitch Delorenzo cracked a game-winning solo-shot in the seventh inning to lift Clark past Anna Maria. Senior Matt Tillo and Nick Kellogg each tallied single hits in the victory.

Clark sent another five hurlers to the mound in game two. Senior Greg Long was superb in two innings on the hill, with no runs, no hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Rookie Jeff Van Steenbergen picked up the win in two innings of relief.

Freshman Matt Bohl went three-for-four with an RBI and stolen base to lead Clark at the plate. Freshman Shawn Lamothe and junior Ron Bathrick each had three hits in the win.

LACROSSE CONCLUDES FALL SEASON AT CURRY

The lacrosse team closed out their fall season with a round-robin tournament against Curry College, Emerson College and UMass-Boston at Emerson College on Monday afternoon. The tournament was well-attended by Clark lacrosse and family friends.

The Cougars had a good showing in all three games. In the opener against Curry, which Clark will play this spring, was a spirited contest against two teams that were evenly matched.

“Judging from the performance of our team, not only from the returnees, but the newcomers as well, it looks like our offense hasn’t skipped a beat since the end of last season’s win against Lasell,” said seventh-year head coach Evan Davis. “It looks like we might have taken another step forward.”

Coach Davis announced his captains for the 2009 campaign, senior goalkeeper Tyler Campbell and senior attackman Shawn Roche will take the honors.
