2007 SEASON RECAP
Completing the spring with a 13-19 (5-7 NEWMAC) mark, the Clark University baseball team finished fifth in the conference for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Clark punched its ticket to new records in season hits (328), triples (12), RBI (197), and batting average (.317) on the way to its ninth consecutive trip to the NEWMAC Tournament. However, the Cougars were defeated by fourth-seed Babson College (9-6) in the opening round.
The veteran squad won games in grand fashion, posting seven double-digit run victories (four in conference) – over WPI (21-2), MIT (19-14), Babson College (16-12) and Springfield College (19-7) – and prevailed in four contests by one-run this year.
Clark was led by a trio of second-team All-Conference All-Stars in seniors Nick Tapper and Joe Pasciucco and junior Joe Silva. Tapper finished with 101 career hits and set a new mark for putouts in a season with 241. Senior Kyle Breidenstine also cracked the 100-hit milestone with 108 hits.

WHITLOCK, SIMOKONIS AND HAGSTROM TO PLAY IN SOUTHERN COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
Three Clark baseball players will join the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL) this summer. Juniors Miles Whitlock and Gunnar Hagstrom will play for the Tennessee Tornadoes, while junior Dan Simokonis will compete for the Carolina Sox. The SCBL is an amateur wood bat summer league that gathers talent from schools all over the country.
“I am excited that these young men will have the opportunity to play in a league of this caliber,” said head coach Jason Falcon. “Not only will this give them more exposure, but it will give them an opportunity to showcase their talents to a larger audience.”
Whitlock, a right-handed pitcher from Augusta, Me., made the smooth transition from closer to starter for Clark this year. In 10 appearances and 37.0 innings pitched, he ranked 14th in the NEWMAC in ERA (4.38). Whitlock finished the year with a 2-5 mark.
Hagstrom, a tri-captain for the Cougars, finished with a .242 batting average and 22 RBI this spring. A native of Yarmouth, Me., the designated hitter/catcher also capped his career with the 2007 Russ Granger Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a male athlete. Hagstrom is also a three-year letter-winner on the Clark men’s basketball team.
A native of Worcester, Mass., Simokonis also earned the starting nod on the staff this year. The right-handed hurler picked up a pair of victories (2-1) in six appearances on the mound for a 7.45 ERA.
“I am very excited about their opportunity and I know it will be a fun and positive experience,” Falcon said.
The SCBL is made up of nine teams located in the Carolinas and Eastern Tennessee. The players will play at least a 42 game schedule; have an All-Star Break, followed by a League Championship tournament where the top six teams will compete. The SCBL enjoys the availability of players and coaches from across the country in their league, including players from Canada, Europe, Japan, and the Caribbean.
