Men's Tennis' Ly Named Nicol Sportsmanship Award Winner
WORCESTER, MASS. 05/03/09 - Clark University's Socheata Ly '09 was named the Nicol Sportsmanship Award winner at the men's tennis end-of-the-year banquet held at the Kneller Athletic Center on Friday evening. The award is presented annually to a men's tennis player who best exemplify the characteristics of Dr. Theodore
Nicol '26.
Originally from Lexington, Mass., Ly has been a three-year player for the Cougars. Finishing the spring with a .500 mark (4-4) in singles play, he earned a career-high seven singles victories as a junior. But beyond his ability on the court, head coach Mickey Cahoon believes Ly, also known as "Soki," represented himself and Clark with class off the court as well.
"Soki has earned the respect of his coaches, teammates, and opponents and has been a role model for others to follow for years to come," Cahoon said. "He is an outstanding student and has represented our program with integrity and the highest degree of sportsmanship. He is a great representative of this important award."
Nicol, who coached tennis at Clark during the 1950s and 1960s, was considered a friend and advisor to his players and was known for his genteel sportsmanship, integrity and camaraderie. The award was established in 1990 by Barry Epstein '62.
