Women's Tennis Falls to Mount Holyoke College, 8-1

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 13, 2007) - The Clark University women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. It was the Lyons second league triumph of the season. With the loss, Clark remained winless in Conference play.

Mount Holyoke took all three doubles points and never looked back. The Lyons first and third doubles pairings each won my scores of 8-3, while its number two duo of sophomores Beatrix Hartmann (Redding, Conn./Mount St. Mary) and Sarah London (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Academic Magnet) captured an 8-1 victory.

It was much of the same on the singles side, where the Lyons captured five of the six points. First year Natalie Hsiang (Pittsford, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) downed senior Mika Sneddon (Weston, Conn./The Academy of Swift River) 6-1, 7-5 at the first slot, and senior Meaghan Sloane (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) topped first year Freddie Palmer (Newton, Mass./Newton North) in the number two matchup.

In the third singles contest, sophomore Elizabeth Tighe (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over senior Kristen Domurad (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack). London and Hartmann rounded things out for the Lyons with wins at fourth and fifth singles, respectively.

The Cougars lone point of the afternoon came from the number six singles matchup, where first year Emily Schweitzer (Northampton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) edged sophomore Eleni Scordilis (Florence, Mass./Northampton) 7-5, 5-7, (10-8).

Mount Holyoke (3-7, 2-5 NEWMAC) will return to action next weekend, when it hosts the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament from Friday through Sunday. Clark (2-11, 0-7 NEWMAC) is slated to host Becker College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
