Men's Tennis
History
2009
The 2009 men’s lacrosse campaign began as a season filled with promise. However, the Cougars pre-season hopes were dashed when three leading scorers and the team’s top face-off specialist suffered season-ending injuries. Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Clark (2-13, 1-6) got solid individual performances from freshmen Chris Johnson and Phil Winslow, who combined for 50 points, and saw senior goalkeeper Tyler Campbell and sophomore long-stick midfielder Tim Roche receive Pilgrim League second-team recognition. Campbell set a new Clark record in career saves (635), while Roche broke the school mark for groundballs in a season (111).
Several players received recognition for their individual accomplishments both on and off the field. Leading the team in scoring, senior Shawn Roche (28-17-45) and Campbell secured the squad’s Most Valuable Player accolades, while sophomore Hakeem Hindi accepted dual team honors with the Most Improved Player and Coach’s Award. Senior Drew Silverman received the Athletic Department’s Senior Class Award, given annually to the senior athlete who best exemplifies class, spirit and integrity in his or her athletic endeavor.
Seniors Jeff DeLuca, David Schuberth and Drew Silverman, sophomore Hakeem Hindi and Kevin Schofield and freshmen Travis Durkin and Phil Winslow represented Clark on the Pilgrim League All-Academic team.
2008
With the addition of first-year head coach Mickey Cahoon, the Clark men’s tennis program increased in numbers and in victories with a 4-10 overall mark. The Cougars’ wins came against non-conference opponents including, Wheelock College (8-1), Nichols College (5-4), Mitchell College (9-0) and Salem State College (5-4). The team still has its work cut out in the highly competitive NEWMAC as they were winless (0-5) in league play this season.
Junior Socheata Ly paced the Cougars with seven singles wins – five in the four slot – this spring, while junior Adam Bisceglia picked up six victories at No. 1 singles. Junior Ben Gross and freshman Matt Finley each earned five wins in doubles play, with three victories as a pair.
Clark earned the sixth-seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and concluded its season with a 6-0 loss to third-seed Babson College.
2007
The 2007 Clark University men’s tennis team was 3-7 overall and 1-4 in NEWMAC play. The Cougars captured its first win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Rhode Island College and later won two straight against Emerson College (8-1) and Coast Guard Academy (7-2) – its lone conference win of the season – before heading into the NEWMAC Tournament. Seeded-fifth, Clark was ousted by fourth-seed Babson College (5-0) to conclude its season.
Sophomore Ben Gross paced the Cougars in singles play with a 3-7 record. The Newton, Mass. native, posted a pair of victories at the number two spot against Emerson and a win at number three versus RIC. Other highlights included sophomore Adam Bisceglia’s “W” at top singles in a hard-fought super-breaker set at RIC and a number one singles win by first-year Charlie Sherman against Western New England College.
In doubles play, three Cougar pairs captured wins over their Emerson and Coast Guard counterparts. Senior Brian Brown and Bisceglia prevailed at top-doubles; sophomores Rocci Li and Socheata Ly won at number two and sophomore Ben Voynick and
Gross triumphed in the third slot.
Voynick represented the men’s tennis team on the NEWMAC All-Academic squad.
