ATHLETES COME OUT FOR FUN NIGHT

The Kneller Athletic Center was exploding with excitement and high energy on Sunday night as the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted a dodge ball tournament for its annual Athlete Fun Night. Over 75 Clark athletes representing 17 different varsity teams were paired up to compete against one another for the event.

Clark’s SAAC has been planning this event for months and the turnout was phenomenal. Athletic Director Linda Moulton, who has been at Clark for nearly two decades said it was “…probably the best turn-out we’ve had for an athlete’s fun night in a few years.”

Co-director of the event and men’s basketball co-captain, D.J. Brinn added, "Everyone could tell that there was excitement in the air the second you walked into the gym. Teams were forming and players started warming up their arms. Once the games started everybody was involved and cheering. All in all everyone had a great time. It was chaotic, crazy, loud, and most of all fun."

Fun Night concluded with a victory for the Baseball and Softball Team #1 tandem. They defeated Baseball and Softball Team #2 in the championship round.

SAAC TRICK OR TREATS FOR A CAUSE

The Clark University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) dressed up for a good cause on Halloween last Wednesday. In its third annual “Trick or Treat for Canned Goods” fundraiser, SAAC patrolled the neighborhoods surrounding Worcester State College and Assumption College for canned goodies.

SAAC community engagement co-chairs Julie Parnell ‘08 and Lauren Schiappa ’08 spearheaded the event. Prior to Halloween, Parnell, a softball player, and Schiappa, a member of the women’s rowing team, along with the help of six other committee members, alerted the targeted neighborhoods with the distribution of 400 flyers. Additionally, they spread the word through posters, campus and student digest announcements and word-of-mouth.

Their advertisements did not go unnoticed as 30 student-athletes, clad in Clark University apparel, collected 965 pounds of canned goods. Although the numbers were slightly less than last year’s 1,070 pound effort; for the student-athletes, it was a win-win situation. All proceeds were donated to the Worcester County Food Bank.
