Now in his fifth season and second stint as the head coach for the Clark University women’s tennis team, Jim Hayes will work to resurrect the Cougars into a competitive program. Hayes has served three tenures as the head tennis coach at Clark. He coached the women’s team from 1993-94, 1999 and 2006, and led the men’s program in 1988, 1994-95, 1999-2000, 2004 and 2006. Last season, he directed both the men’s and women’s tennis teams.
Hayes believes tennis is an athletic event that can only be played effectively while moving. “If players put themselves in a position to be successful, they will succeed,” says Hayes. He encourages his players to control what they can control, which includes how much effort they are willing to give to the match. Thus he expects commitment from his players to aim for success and personal bests. The teams benefit from Hayes’ coaching philosophy as well as his experience as a pro player.
A 1985 graduate of Assumption College, Hayes played number-one singles and doubles for the Greyhounds; he was a team captain in 1984 and 1985. Following graduation, he went on to earn rankings in the USTA New England open division. Hayes also competed on the ATP Satellite Tour in Israel in 1987.
In addition to coaching, Hayes has previously served as co-manager of the Worcester Tennis Club and general manager and tennis professional at the Athletic Clubs of America in Paxton, Mass. He was also a tennis professional at the Greendale YMCA in Worcester (1992-95), and in Denmark, where he trained a former junior world champion.
