Highlights

2008

Though the Clark University women’s tennis entered the 2008 campaign with five less players than the previous season, the team picked up an additional victory and a pair of quality first-year performers. Freshman Julia Bergeron led the Cougars with seven individual victories, including four at No. 2 singles. She was the only player to garner victories over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponents. Bergeron won at No. 2 singles against Springfield College (4-6, 6-4, 10-4) and versus Smith College (6-3, 6-1). Sophomore Emily Schweitzer was runner-up for Clark in singles wins with five and held the longest team winning streak with three. She won both matches in her pool at the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), outlasting her Simmons opponent 6-1, 2-6, 10-6 and prevailing over her Springfield foe 6-2, 6-3.

Clark struggled early in the season, dropping its first three matches of the year. But, the Cougars responded by winning the next two of three contests, including a 9-0 sweep of Mitchell College and 6-3 win over Emmanuel College. Other team highlights included a 4-2 win over Rhode Island College and back-to-back sweeps over Worcester State College (9-0) and Anna Maria College (9-0) to finish with a 5-9 (0-7 NEWMAC) mark.

Senior Rebecca Good and junior Emily Schweitzer represented the women's tennis team on the All-Academic squad.

2007

The Clark University women’s tennis team got off to a slow start this season. Not only did the Cougars have to contend with a challenging schedule, but they also had to incorporate 11 new faces into the line-up. After dropping the first five games of the season, the team finally picked up a win over Mitchell College (9-0). The Cougars went through a string of defeats before winning three of their last four matches to finish with a 4-11 (0-6 NEWMAC) mark.

Captain Kristen Domurad ‘08 led Clark with seven victories – five at number three singles. She claimed a win at number two singles versus Bay Path College (6-3, 6-0) and posted a pair of super tie-breaker set wins at number two and three, respectively, against Becker College (4-6, 6-3, 10-3) and Worcester State College (6-3, 7-6, 7-4) en route to a Cougar of the Week nod. Newcomer Freddie Palmer ’11 also had a solid season, picking up six wins – two at the top slot – in her collegiate debut. In doubles play, Domurad and teammate Phoebe Livingston ‘10 combined to post a team-high four victories.

Three Cougars received All-NEWMAC academic honors, including Ashley Faden ’08, Rebecca Good ’09 and Livingston.

2006

In Jim Hayes inaugural campaign with the Clark University women’s tennis program, the Cougars posted a 1-12 (0-7 NEWMAC) mark. Their only victory was a 9-0 sweep over non-conference foe Bay Path College. Clark swept doubles matches as senior co-captains Emily Slack and Alycia Weiner posted an 8-3 victory at the top spot. Junior Kristen Domurad and first-year Phoebe Livingtson earned their first doubles victory with an 8-6 win at number two, while sophomore Rebecca Good and first-year Nicole Wachtel prevailed 8-1 at number three.

In singles play, Slack earned 6-1, 6-1 wins at number one, while Wachtel blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth spot.

Other highlights for the Cougars included the addition of first-year Celina Grisi, who led the team in number one singles play with a 5-2 record. A native of La Paz, Bolivia, Grisi posted a 6-3, 6-3 win in her first collegiate singles match against conference rival Wheaton College. She also earned points in a 6-2, 6-4 victory in top singles against Smith College and notched a 6-2, 6-0 win in number one singles in Clark’s final conference match of the season against Springfield College.

Additionally, the first-year phenom held a three-match number one singles win streak against Emmanuel College, Smith College, and Rhode Island College. Slack and Weiner also paired up to notch a pair of victories for Clark, including an 8-3 doubles victory in their final home match of the season against Worcester State College, while Domurad and Livingston also won two doubles matches.

Rebecca Good ’09 (3.50) was the lone beneficiary of the NEWMAC academic all-conference award for women’s tennis.

2005

Under the direction of second-year head coach Lisa Meola ‘98, the Clark University women’s tennis team finished with a 2-10 overall record and 0-7 in the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Cougars captured victories this season against Regis College (6-3) and Pine Manor College (9-0). New England weather cancelled three matches this season against Emmanuel, Bay Path and Worcester State.

The young Cougar squad of six returning players and two first-years was led by junior co-captains Emily Slack (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) and Alycia Weiner (Quincy, MA/Quincy). Slack, returning to the number one singles position for Clark, captured a win against Pine Manor College. Weiner recorded singles wins at the number two spot against Regis and in the number three position against Nichols and Pine Manor. The doubles duo of Weiner and first-year Rebecca Good (Durham, CT/Coginchaug Regional) teamed up for two wins at the number two position against Nichols and Pine Manor. Good ended the season with a singles win at the number four position against Pine Manor.
Sophomore Kristen Domurad (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) posted the most singles wins this season for the Cougars. Domurad earned victories at the number five position against Regis and Nichols as well as wins against Pine Manor and conference rival Mount Holyoke at the number six spot.

2004

Under the direction of first-year head coach Lisa Meola ‘98, the 2004 Clark University women’s tennis team finished 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Cougars swept Bay Path College 9-0 in their final non-conference match of the season. Weather conditions dictated much of the fall season canceling four scheduled matches for the Cougars.

Senior co-captain and three-year player Margaret Clark recorded victories in both singles and doubles in the Cougars’ win against Bay Path College. Clark played at the number three singles position, and teamed up with sophomore Amanda Clark to defeat Bay Path’s number three doubles team 8-2. In addition to her doubles victory, Clark recorded two singles victories at the number four position for the Cougars

2003

The 2003 tennis team finished 2-11 overall and 0-9 in the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Cougars defeated Becker College 7-2 and recorded a win in their final regular season match against Pine Manor College 7-2. Senior co-captain Lauryn Christiansen led the way against Pine Manor with an 8-2 win at the number one singles position and a 8-2 win at the number three doubles position with classmate and co-captain Alicia Fidalgo.

Christiansen and Fidalgo played at the number one and six singles positions respectively all year. Christiansen finished with two singles wins and Fidalgo tallied three singles victories. Fidalgo’s recorded a convincing 6-3, 6-2 NEWMAC win against Wellesley’s number six singles player early in the season. Christiansen and Fidalgo posted a 2-1 record as a doubles team.

2002

Junior captain Lauryn Christiansen posted a 4-10 overall record at the number one singles position in 2002. First-year Justyna Mietelska had a solid rookie season finishing with a 5-6 record at the number six singles position and 5-7 overall while sophomore Victoria Fiorini won three matches at the number two singles position.

2001

Senior captain Katie Sibley (Marshfield,MA/Marshfield HS)led the Cougars and was named to the 2001 NEWMAC All-Conference team. Sibley compiled a 3-5 conference record and 8-6 overall record. In doubles play she had a 6-7 overall record. She had key wins against #1 singles player from WPI (7-6,6-1) and the two #2 singles players from Wheaton and Springfield. In Sibley's eight victories she only lost two sets.

2000

Nancy Haaz '04 earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors in 2000 for her play at the #1 singles position and was named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year after compiling an impressive 13-3 overall singles record, with the majority of the wins at the #1 singles position. In addition, she had seven doubles wins at the #2 position.

1998

Sarah Bingham '01 was the first Clark women's tennis player to earn NEWMAC All-Conference honors in 1998 for her play at number four singles.

1997

At the 1997 Rolex Invitational Tournament, Lisa Meola '98 bounced back from a first round loss to win four consecutive matches and a spot in the consolation finals.
