Professor Alan A. Jones, 1944-2006
Professor Alan A. Jones, dedicated teacher, researcher and advisor to numerous students, died unexpectedly on May 23, 2006. Professor Jones was a member of the Chemistry Department at Clark for more than thirty years. During that time, he was mentor to undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students and spent as much time working with them about their lives in general as he did about chemistry. His research focused on solid state NMR spectroscopy and his work was supported for many years through grants such as the National Science Foundation, Petroleum Research Fund and the Army Research Office. He was a devoted scientist whose enthusiasm for teaching and commitment to research was felt and shared by so many students and colleagues alike. Family and friends have established the Alan A. Jones Endowed Graduate Fellowship Fund to help support graduate study in chemistry. To contribute to this fund, please contact
Ms. Jane Richards, University Advancement. Our hope is to raise adequate funding to establish a permanent endowment for a graduate fellowship in Al's honor.
Memorial Tribute to Professor Donald Nelson
On August 29th, 2005, the Department and the Clark community lost an outstanding teacher, mentor and scientist in the untimely death of Professor Donald Nelson. Professor Nelson taught a wide variety of courses at Clark at both the undergraduate and graduate level including Introductory Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, The History of Science, Biochemistry, Biophysical Chemistry and Protein Chemistry. He will be best remembered at Clark as advisor to a large number of B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. students whom he infused with his love of science and research and with his dedication to teaching and learning. His family and friends have created a fund here at Clark in his honor to provide support for undergraduate research students. To contribute to the fund, please contact Ms. Jane James. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to establish a permanent endowment to Don’s honor.
Linsey Stiles '05: Chemistry undergrad meets with success
In April 2005 Linsey's paper "Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Complexes Between Wild-Type and Mutant Anthrax Protective Antigen Variants and a Model Anthrax Toxin Receptor" was published in the Journal of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics.
Linsey's other accomplishments include her participation in two conferences: NERCE/BEID (New England Regional Center of Excellence/Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases) which was held in New Hampshire September 20, 2004 and the 2004 Triangle Biophysics Symposium – Electrons to Proteins: Coupling and Linkage in Biology, held in North Carolina November 3-5, 2004.
She also has an online extended abstract published in the Journal of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics describing further computational results on the anthrax toxins presented by her at the Albany 2005: 14th Conversation in Biomolecular Stereodynamics at SUNY-Albany, Albany, N.Y. June 14-18, 2005).
