Ph.D. Brochure (2017 update)

The Chemistry Department offers programs leading to a doctorate of philosophy in the fields of biophysical, chemical biology, inorganic, materials, organic, organometallic, physical, polymer chemistry, and in biochemistry and molecular biology. A variety of graduate courses are taught in the Chemistry Department, and advanced courses in other departments such as Biology and Physics are available.

Graduate students also may elect to take courses at nearby institutions; for example, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute or at the University of Massachusetts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (both in Worcester).

The rare combination of a small department and an active faculty with many and varied research interests offers the student a unique opportunity for an intellectually stimulating program in a close and friendly atmosphere.

Because of our strong commitment to research, the department has been able to acquire specialized research equipment normally found only in much larger departments. Much of this equipment is physically located in the Sackler Sciences Center; however, the department also has ready access to a considerable amount of additional equipment at affiliated institutions in the greater Worcester area, mainly at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
