Mission and Educational Philosophy
The mission of the Department of Language, Literature and Culture (formerly Foreign Languages and Literatures) is to advance the linguistic and cultural competencies of students in one or more foreign languages. Mastering a foreign language includes speaking and writing proficiency, but also increasing one's appreciation and critical analysis of the cultures that share that language.
Language, Literature and Culture Program
Majors are offered in
- Spanish
- French and Francophone Studies
- Comparative Literature (including an emphasis on any of the languages we teach)
- Combined Foreign Languages (with focus on any of the languages we teach at Clark)
- Ancient Civilization
Students interested in studying
- Japanese and Chinese may be interested in the Asian Studies interdisciplinary major
- German may be interested in the German Studies self-designed major
- Greek, Latin or Hebrew may be interested in the major in Ancient Civilization or the concentration in Jewish Studies
- Spanish may also be interested in the concentration in Latin American and Latino Studies
