Current Research Interests
Klaus got his first degree in Physical Geography in 1996 in his native country, Germany,
from the University of Trier. His thesis treated the Holocene climate change and dryland lake
hydrology in northeastern Spain. After winning the Government of Canada Award to
undertake PhD research, he moved to the University of Toronto in 1996. There he completed
a PhD in Geography, studying the effects of varying weather patterns on soil erosion in
Canada and Mexico. This was followed in 2001 by postdoctoral research in Israel on the
role of rainfall-surface interaction for landscape development in the northern Negev.
Following the project in Israel, Klaus started academic teaching as a visiting assistant
professor at Clark University in 2002. He joined the University
of Exeter in Devon, England on July 1, 2003. His work there focuses on the interaction
between atmosphere and surface in transitional environments. In October 2003 Klaus
was also appointed Research Assistant Professor at the George Perkins Marsh Institute at
Clark University. At Clark, Klaus collaborates with Dr. Honglei Zhu and Professor Ron Eastman on
the development of process-based GIS analysis of surface processes such as
the new RUNOFF module in IDRISI. Field areas include the United Kingdom, China, Italy,
Germany and Israel.
