Current Research and Teaching

My current research interest is to apply cutting edge technology, such as protein microarray, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry and proteomic technology, to accelerate our basic understanding of major human diseases. They include diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular or inflammatory diseases. By combining technology and biology, it is now possible to obtain a more complete view of the disease process through a “system biology” approach. This approach allows the integration of cellular signal transduction pathways, identification of protein or metabolite expression as useful biomarkers and post-translational modifications to explain disease mechanism. Meaningful databases through proteomic profiling or metabolites identification will significantly improve our scientific research initiatives. After the discovery phase, scientific clinical validation of the findings with animal models and human patient samples will greatly accelerate their clinical applications and biotechnology development. New diagnostic tool and treatment regimen can emerge. This will be the true essence of translational science with a personal medicine focus. For instance, the application of biomarkers to stratify patient population can significantly impact the testing of herbal mixture, biosimilars, protein or drug therapeutics and its related determination of toxicity, production QC and bioassays.
