Program Notes:
Escaping the Delta was inspired by Elijah Wald’s book of the same title, a biography of the iconic bluesman, Robert Johnson. Wald’s revisionist history sketches Johnson as an itinerant musician, who moved fluidly between musical worlds and styles. This chronicle imagines the Delta blues, and the music of the subsequent Blues Revival, as only possible through this type of synthesis of sounds and experiences. Similarly, my composition imagines a blues informed by the traditions of concert music.
