Program Notes
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus is credited with saying: ”You can't step into the same river twice,” which I take to mean that the inexorable flow of time makes each moment unique. I’ve tried to emphasize this aspect of musical experience by working with reduced thematic material in this piece. Entire sections circulate around a single pitch before moving chromatically downward. But as the listener revisits familiar musical elements, I hope that the small differences between iterations become more prominent. The language here is essentially Varesian with a stress on timbre, rhythm and the drama of gestures composed from unblended blocks of sound.
