Alumni Spotlight

Peter Jose
Personal Injury Claims Adjuster
Commerce Insurance Company

What year did you graduate?
2003

What did you study at Clark? Majored in Management

What is your hometown? Shrewsbury, MA

What is your current position? Personal Injury Claims Adjuster - Commerce Insurance Company

How long have you been at this job? 3 years at Commerce Insurance Company, 2 years in this position

How did you find your current job?
I made a contact through an internship I had at Commerce during my senior year at Clark. I had two other jobs prior to working at Commerce that I was dissatisfied with and I called my contact, the manager of the department in which I had interned, and asked him for a job. My first position at Commerce was a customer service representative.

Describe in a few sentences the work that you do: My job involves evaluating the monetary value of people’s injury claims when they get hurt in a car accident. My job is to determine the value of a person’s injury based on the severity of their injury and disability. I negotiate with attorneys who represent the injured people and if we cannot agree on a value we may decide to have the case brought to an arbitrator, a mediator, or to court and have a jury award a settlement.

What do you feel are skills necessary to do your job?
Attention to detail, hard work and patience.

Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years?
If I stay in insurance, I would like to be in a supervisory position or if I decide to leave the insurance industry, I would like to take a position teaching in a post high school environment and/or start a small business.

What recommendations would you provide to current students interested in pursuing a similar job?  Do your research. Determine what you think your interests are and talk to people who have been working in that area for more than a couple of years. Don’t worry if you change jobs when you start; sometimes it takes a while to figure out what you don’t want before you can figure out what you do want.

Get to Know...
Prof. Maurry Tamarkin

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

Alma Mater: I have an A.B. (major in Geology) and Ph. D. (major in Finance), both from Washington University in St. Louis.

Courses currently teaching: Graduate Cases in International Finance and undergraduate Corporate Finance.

Current Research: I am working on the risk attitudes of investors. I am currently researching sports betting (football and basketball) to determine if different betting propositions give information about outcomes.

Favorite thing about Clark: The size of Clark gives me an opportunity to interact with my students.

In my free time… I read and jog. I like to play chess and poker, neither of which have I demonstrated an aptitude.

Favorite Movie/Book: Favorite movie is a tossup between Beau Geste with Gary Cooper and Yankee Doodle Dandy with Jimmy Cagney. I saw both at an early age and they have stuck with me. Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart is also excellent.

Favorite book is The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky although almost any play (I realize these are not books) by Shakespeare and Don Quixote by Cervantes are right up there.

Place I would most like to visit: Belka, Ukraine where my father was from. Other than this emotional tie, I would like to visit Greece

If I wasn't a professor, I would be... most likely working for a bank or an investment firm.

Management Internships

Taking part in an internship should be a priority for every Management student at some point in their undergraduate career. Internships allow you to explore areas of business and management you think you might be interested in before you go for your first job, while also letting you build your resume, network and gain some professional experience. Over the summer, many Management students took advantage of an internship opportunity. Here are just two of the internships our students did this summer:

Adam Androphy: WGBH Educational Foundation (Boston) - Human Resources Assistant. He found his internship on Clark's E-Recruiting website. His responsibilities included assisting the staff in various aspects of hiring, benefits administration, compensation, and training and development programs.

Sheetal Chodhari: State Bank of India, Tel Aviv Branch (Israel) - Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer. She learned of the internship opportunity through family who informed her about the opening of this new branch of the bank. She did a host of diverse projects related to public relations, correspondence, accounting and also analysis of financial statements of corporations

If you are interested in exploring internship opportunities this year, check out the upcoming internship fairs Career Services is sponsoring. There are 2 mini fairs on campus on August 28 and 29, and a larger internship/job fair in Boston in October. If you want more information, please visit the Career Services office.

New Clark Student Business

As students are returning to campus this week, a Clark student run business is busy with paperwork and preparations to open its doors this fall and provide students with something new and fresh to do this year. Spiritual Haze was founded by Clark students Vicky Mariano, Bilal Anwar, Shahzad Godil and Wei Che Cheng. The idea was generated by Vicky Mariano, and the groundwork for the business was laid last year in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship capstone course, through which the other students became involved.

Spiritual Haze will feature a café, live bands, hookah bar, art gallery, open mic nights and a variety of other cultural and entertainment events. A fellow Clark student and I&E capstone course participant, Asher Cowan, will be handling the food for the café as he continues work on his own plans for an organic, fast food restaurant. Space will also be available for students to rent to hold their own events, and students are encouraged to suggest ideas for events and programs they would like to see held there.

Spiritual Haze is currently open for private parties, and will officially open to the public at the end of September. It is located at 482 Park Ave. Check out their website, www.spiritualhaze.com, to stay up to date on grand opening plans, or contact Vicky at Vicky.SpiritualHaze@gmail.com to find out more information.

Tip of the Month

Attend at least one Executive Discussions at Noon lecture series this year. The series was developed to bring successful, creative executives to campus to share their management experience with GSOM students and faculty. The sessions provide industry perspectives and a behind the scenes look at business decision-making. This is a chance for you to hear first hand from some of the most successful business leaders of today, and also ask questions during the lunch that follows the lecture.

Previous speakers have included Mike Eskew, Chairman & CEO of UPS; Jim Heyworth, former President & CEO of HBO; Arjun Mathrani, former Chase CFO; and Ralph Crowley, President & CEO of Polar and Adirondack Beverages.

The first session will take place at noon on Tuesday, September 25. It will be hosted by our Executive in Residence, Peter Rowley, and will be joined by special guest Natalie Gustafson, an Emmy award winning television producer. A pizza lunch will follow. The location is to be determined, so be on the lookout for more information on the event to be sent your way, as well as posted on GSOM's intranet.
