The World of Finance brought to the Classroom

"I never thought I could be exposed to the real finance world just by sitting in a classroom, until I came to Clark," says GSOM student Xinyue Fan, a masters in finance candidate for 2015. She references her Investment Fund course, as being particularly significant to that experience.

"In my Investment Fund course, the students acted as analysts and our professor was like our boss as we managed an equity portfolio on behalf of the Clark endowment," she explains.

Indeed, in addition to covering the typical topics, such as financial statement analysis and equity valuation models, the Investment Fund course allows students to invest actual money in the stock market, thanks to the Clark University endowment. This type of practical, real-world experience is unparalleled.

"Thanks to this course, I have hands-on experience to talk about during job interviews, and I’ve never felt more confident to start my career in this industry," Xinyue states.

Xinyue currently works as a teaching assistant for Professor Steve Ng, the instructor of Investment Fund. Due to her strong academics, she was also selected to the International Graduate Program at Standard Chartered Bank, Chengdu, China, in the department of Institutional Clients and Corporate Finance.

"All of the courses I took at Clark gave me the confidence of a finance professional. These courses not only set the stage for me, but also taught me how to do critical thinking and how to manage challenges and pressures I might be facing in my future jobs," Xinyue adds.
