College-Wide Assessment Plan

Clark's work to date has focused on two primary forms of assessment: formative and summative assessment. In terms of methodology, Clark will draw on two kinds of data:

  • survey data and reports
  • and an eportfolio project that makes use of artifacts, reflections, and rubrics as part of a direct longitudinal sampling of student work.

Currently the first in a series of reports has been published (see link below) and an e-portfolio pilot is being launched to test out the use of rubrics and student portfolios to make students' learning visible in direct ways (stay tuned, more to come).

Published Survey Reports

Clark University's Task Force on Undergraduate Education noted in its final report Liberal Education and Effective Practice: A Plan for the 21st Century, that the use of survey data- in particular, data stemming from students' participation in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) – as an important piece of Clark's assessment approach. Since that time, the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) has published Making Progress: What We Know About the Achievement of Liberal Education Outcomes (Finley, 2012), which identified a set of questions that have been identified from a range of national surveys that have been aligned with the AAC&U's four essential learning outcomes. Clark's first four learning outcomes are aligned with the essential learning outcomes. This overlap is helpful since it allows Clark not only a way to use national survey data to better understand Clark perceptions of progress on the learning outcomes, but also provides a nationally accepted method for comparing Clark student data with that of other colleges and universities.

2013-2014

Summary and Synthesis for All Survey Reports Examining LEEP Learning Outcomes (BCSSE 2013-2014, NSSE 2014, HEDS 2013-2014)

Clark-Authored Reports

This report integrates findings from all LEEP Compass Survey Reports to date.

It pulls together what is known about the LEEP Learning Outcomes from various surveys of Clark students, including:

  • Before College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE), taken by first year undergrads at Clark and at other institutions during orientation.
  • National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), a sampling of Clark students and students at other institutions, taken during their first and last years of college.
  • Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium Alumni Survey (HEDS), completed by Clark alumni and alumni from other institutions who are 5 and 10 years post graduation.

This report takes a comprehensive look at what survey data tell us about students' perceptions of what they bring with them to Clark, where they believe the institution has supported their development, and how they feel about the LEEP outcomes after spending time away from the institution. In all cases, because these are national surveys, we can compare Clark's performance with that of other schools.

2016

The data reported here focuses only on questions pertaining to the LEEP outcomes.
