Writing an Effective Scholarship Essay - A Message from Dr. Anne Ellen
Geller
Writing the
Application Essay
When writing an
application essay for a fellowship or scholarship it is important to identify
the essay's purpose and carefully think through which qualities make you a
prospective candidate for the fellowship or scholarship for which you are
applying. At various steps in the process of writing an application essay it is
easy to lose focus, and you might find a visit to the Writing Center helpful.
The application essay for a fellowship or scholarship offers you the opportunity
to highlight strong writing skills, and even if you feel confident, both in your
ideas and your writing, it is often very advantageous to let an outside reader
look at your work and provide a new perspective.
At the Writing Center
you can have an hour-long one-on-one conference with an experienced writing
consultant. You can bring your writing to the Writing Center at all stages in
the writing process, from formulating ideas to final revisions.
Please call the
Writing Center for an appointment at (508) 793-7405, or come in for a visit. It
is located on the first floor of the Corner House (corner of Woodland and
Charlotte Street).
