Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) contain specific information about the nature of a substance and the hazards associated with it. There is not a set format for these documents, but all of them must contain the following information:

  • Company Information
  • Substance identity and Hazardous Ingredients
  • Physical and chemical Characteristics
  • Fire and Explosion Hazard Data
  • Health Hazard Data
  • Reactivity Data
  • Spill or Leak clean up Procedures
  • Special Protection Information
  • Special Precautions for safe handling and use

The law requires that these documents must be in English and available to all employees working with or near the substance. Supervisors must keep the  MSDS of each chemical in their work area. They must be made available to their workers. Please mail a copy to Frank Abell. The copy is then placed in the main cabinet located in the photocopy room across from the chemistry office. This room is also known as "the cage".

The MSDS can be obtained from the chemical supplier or manufacturer. An MSDS must either accompany or precede the shipment. If the MSDS is not received the supervisor must obtain one as soon as possible by contacting the chemical supplier.
