The Henry J. Leir High School Initiatives Series

The Henry J. Leir Grade 11 Prize

The Henry J. Leir prize is being awarded annually to a high school student at The International School of Luxembourg (ISL). Because of the shared interest of both the Leir Luxembourg Program and the ISL in furthering academic excellence, the Leir Luxembourg Program awards the prize of €500 to a grade 11 student for an outstanding essay in English. The prize was created to honor Henry J. Leir, whose entrepreneurial excellence and exceptional generosity inspired the institutions to remember his deep and abiding interest in literature, languages, and the arts. Entries are solicited from eligible students and the winner is chosen by a committee of the ISL faculty under the auspices of the ISL Humanities Department.

The 2007 annual prize was awarded to Wesley McMinimy for his essay entitled "Myrtle Wilson in Relation to the Valley of Ashes in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby." Wesley is a citizen of the United States of America enrolled at the International School of Luxembourg (ISL). At ISL, Wesley is pursuing a Secondary School Diploma as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB): the school's most rigorous program of studies. In addition to his seven subjects, Wesley is studying Theory of Knowledge, writing a 4,000 word extended essay in philosophy and completing the 150-hour Creativity Action and Service requirement of the IB diploma program. He has also earned many top-student awards in math, sciences, and the humanities. In addition to his academic pursuits, Wesley is very active in extracurricular activities, which include Student Council, Global Issues Network, Amnesty International, ISL Honour Society, ISL Theatre, and varsity basketball.

The 2006 annual prize was awarded to Priyanka Verma. Priyanka, a British citizen of Indian parentage who came to the ISL when her parents moved to Luxembourg in 2001.

Maxime Rischard received the first annual prize for his essay on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's novel, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in the summer of 2005.
