Global ScholarsClass of 2009Maria (Gaby) Arguello Involvement in Student Organizations: Women’s Tennis Team Latino Student Organization International Student Association Elena Couto Involvement in student organizations: Women’s Volleyball team Clark Fund Global Scholar internship experience (if applicable): Dialogue Direct - New York City, NY Fundraising on the streets of New York City on behalf of Children International, a non-profit organization that finds sponsors for children in under developing countries. It was a very tough job, but a very good learning experience. Best GSP memory: Fundraiser for the Worcester Food Bank during my
Freshman year (Fall 2005): it was a very fun and interactive way of helping out
the community and, in my opinion, it was the activity that was best able to
bring all of the GSP together. Long Lin Ian McCormick Involvement in student organizations: Caribbean and African Student Association (CASA) Black Student Union International Student Association Muslim Culture Society Peer Advisor Best GSP memory: I was not prepared as much as the others for the academic
panel and sixty-odd people showed up. I got really nervous and my friend said
that I turned red and looked like I had hives. Tati Mein Involvement in student organizations: Open (formerly known as GLBTA), Outing Club Global Scholar internship experience: Hole in the Wall Kids Camp Counselor Best GSP memory: Panel on gangs Vesela Morova Involvement in student organizations: International Student Association (ISA) events planning, Jazz Band, Model United Nations Global Scholar internship experience: Anton Fellowship Internship in Montana. Flute making. Best GSP memory: The dinner at the President’s House, Fall 2005, my first one.
It was amazing because I had just arrived to the U.S. and found myself having a
fancy dinner with the president and all the GSP mentors. I was impressed how
warm, welcoming, and supportive everyone was, and still is. Deotima Mukherjee Dushani Palliyaguru Involvement in student organizations: Residential life and Housing: Resident Advisor Chemistry Club, International Students Association South Asian Students Association Global Scholar internship experience: The summer following my sophomore year, I interned at Dr. Leslie Shaw’s cancer biology lab at UMASS Medical School. The primary focus of the work was to identify novel genes that may be involved in breast cancer metastasis. The best aspect about the internship was that it combined both my academic interests, bioinformatics and genetics and due to this reason I will be developing this work into a senior honors thesis which I am excited about. Best GSP memory: The first GSP benefit concert for the Worcester food bank was
organized in 2005. As a first year student back then, it was a great opportunity
to get to know and work with some unique individuals who were part of the GSP.
It was particularly rewarding and satisfying to have worked hard towards an
important cause which also lead to meeting and making new friends. |
