Events at Clark University Mark the 100th birthday of Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark University and the Worcester County Poetry Association will honor the 100th birthday of Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz with events at Clark on Wednesday, Nov. 2; Friday, Nov. 4; and Saturday, Nov. 5.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, the winners of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium Student Poetry Contest will read from their original poetry in the Grace Conference Room in Clark University's Higgins University Center, 950 Main Street, at 7 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5, Clark will host a free two-day symposium examining the life and poetry of Kunitz. Scholars and poets from New England and New York will participate, including: Dr. Robert Cording, professor of English and creative writing at the College of the Holy Cross; Jonathan Blake, instructor, Worcester State College; Cleopatra Mathis, director of the Creative Writing Program at Dartmouth College; Dr. B. Eugene McCarthy, professor of English - emeritus, College of the Holy Cross; Dr. Laura Jehn Menides, professor of English - emeritus, WPI; Dr. Parker Towle, Dartmouth Medical School; Dr. Thomas Travisano, professor of English, Hartwick College; Dr. Michael True, professor of English - emeritus, Assumption College. “Clark University is honored to play a lead role in the 100th birthday celebration of Stanley Kunitz, a Worcester native and one of America’s distinguished past Poet Laureates,” said Jay Elliott, professor of English at Clark and chair of the Symposium Committee. “Acknowledging his influence on modern American poetry, the sessions at Clark will be devoted to the theme ‘The Poet as Mentor.’”

These events are sponsored by the Office of the President, the Higgins School of Humanities, and the English Department at Clark. They are free and open to the public. These events are offered as part of the Poetry Harvest Festival 2005 . Carle Johnson, a 1957 graduate of Clark, serves as the executive director of the Worcester County Poetry Association.

Clark was the first university to present Stanley Kunitz with an honorary doctor of letters degree in 1961.
