Fall Convocation and Salute to Student Scholars

Worcester, Mass. - Orientation and move-in are under way at Clark, where approximately 580 first-year students are joining the campus for fall classes, which start on Monday, August 27.

The fall Convocation and Salute to Student Scholars mark the official opening of the academic year and will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29 in the Daniels Theater, Atwood Hall. A short, formal ceremony will include opening remarks by President John Bassett and the awarding of university-wide awards and fellowships to outstanding faculty and students. Dean of the College and Associate Provost Walter Wright will give the Convocation address, "Why Are We Here?"

A Salute to Student Scholars reception will follow Convocation at 3 p.m. in Tilton Hall, Higgins University Center.

Orientation, which at Clark is called "Week One," runs Wednesday, August 22 to Sunday, August 26. Family Weekend is slated for Sept. 28-30.

Incoming first-year students were asked to complete a summer reading assignment and they will be introduced to Clark's academic life with professors leading stimulating discussions related to the book, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down," by Anne Fadiman. The author will speak at Clark on October 1.
