Office of Study Abroad and Study Away Programs

Overview of Requirements

First, determine whether your Clark academic program will allow you to study for a month, semester, or year abroad. Among the issues you need to consider are the following:

  • the perspectives you still need to fulfill;
  • the number of units you've completed in your major;
  • a course you might have to take, which may be offered at Clark only in a particular semester; and
  • Clark's residency requirement.

Clark's residency requirement does not allow students to study on Non-Clark/Affiliated Programs during their senior year.

Complete an outline of your requirements and a semester-by-semester plan of how you intend to fulfill them before discussing these with your faculty advisor.

Questions frequently asked regarding the participation in a Clark Study Abroad program are addressed below:

If you participate in a Clark Study Abroad program,

  • you should study abroad during your junior year;
  • credits/units earned count towards your residency requirement and your Clark degree;
  • grades earned will appear on your transcript and are calculated into your cumulative GPA (all courses except, for example, Internship credits, are awarded letter grades);
  • perspectives may be fulfilled abroad with advance approval, if possible, consult with a member of the Academic Advising Center;
  • major or concentration credit should be approved by your department chair in advance, if possible; and
  • study abroad programs do not grant more than four Clark units per semester.

Students participating in one of the semester or year-long programs receive four units for semester programs and eight units for full-year programs, provided that they complete all work, take all required exams, and submit all papers. The number of courses to be taken varies from program to program. It is very important to determine the exact equivalent of four/eight Clark units!

For the Luxembourg May Term program, students receive one unit upon successful completion of their course.
