Welcome from AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider

Carol Geary SchneiderThe Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) is very pleased to be a co-sponsor of the Conference on Liberal Education and Effective Practice with Clark University. The themes of this conference stand at the heart of AAC&U's initiative, Liberal Education and America's Promise—a 10 year initiative that we launched in 2005 to focus campus practice on fostering essential learning outcomes for all students, whatever their chosen field of study. Through LEAP, AAC&U is engaging campus leaders and practitioners as well as members of the general public with core questions about what really matters in college.

No question is more central to current debates about undergraduate education than the question of how today's liberal education can provide all college students with the knowledge, skills and commitments they need to be effective practitioners in everything they do—in the workplace, in their communities, in their families. I commend Clark President John Bassett for taking a lead on this issue, and I look forward to joining the other participants in this conference to learn from the latest research and to develop ways that we can collectively make our colleges and universities more intentional and purposeful about providing students with the learning they need.

AAC&U also looks forward to featuring findings and highlights from the conference on our Web site and in our journal, Liberal Education.
