Databases in Physics

It is a bibliographic database that indexes articles in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Physics, Geology, Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Atmospheric Sciences and other general science subjects. English-language periodicals published in the United States and elsewhere are covered; non-English language articles are also included if English abstracts are provided.

The arXiv is owned, operated, and funded by Cornell University. It is also partially funded by the National Science Foundation. The arXiv physics archive was created in 1991 to facilitate the dissemination of physics literature to the physics community. Today the arXiv is an e-print service in the fields of physics, mathematics, non-linear science, computer science, and quantitative biology.

Hosted by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is a NASA-funded project which maintains four bibliographic databases containing more than 3.9 million records: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Instrumentation, Physics and Geophysics, and preprints in Astronomy. The main body of data in the ADS consists of bibliographic records, which are searchable through the Abstract Service query forms.

Searching US granted patents is free. However, Downloading patents, searching international patents, and searching US and international patent applications is fee based.

Digital Book Index provides links to more than 90,000 title records from more than 1800 commercial and non-commercial publishers, universities, and various private sites. About 52,000 of these books, texts, and documents are available free, while many others are available at very modest cost. It covers most major disciplines—literature, history, science and the history of science, social sciences, medicine, etc. A reference section includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauri, glossaries, bibliographies, and etc.

"The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact. In short, it intends to offer a one stop shop for users to Open Access Journals.
All subject areas and languages will be covered." It allows uset to do keywords searching for the names of the e-journals included within the Directory. Each journal provides full-text access to its articles.

Dissertation Abstracts Online (Dissertations)

It contains more than 1.5 million listings for doctoral dissertations and master’s thesesfrom institutions in the North America and Europe. Dates covered: 1861 to present, abstracts since 1980, and thesis abstracts since 1988 .

The Information Bridge provides the open source to full-text and bibliographic records of Department of Energy (DOE) research and development reports in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics. It consists of full-text documents produced and made available by the Department of Energy National Laboratories and grantees from 1995 forward.

The Energy Citations Database (ECD) is designed and developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI). It is publicly available without charge to users. It includes bibliographic records of literature in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents.

Sponsored, developed, and maintained by the Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), EnergyFiles, this portal allows users to access over 500 databases and Web sites containing information and resources pertaining to science and technology of interest to the Department of Energy, with an emphasis on the physical sciences.

GEOBASE is predominately a bibliographic database which contains abstracts for most records. Its coverage includes worldwide literature on geography, geology, and ecology. Free online U.S. government information from the Government Printing Office, it provides search and retrieval of full text from over 50 online databases as well as tools and finding aids for other government information, including legislative and regulatory material, as well as publications of all three branches of the U.S. government.

You can either browse the resources by subject area or search the database by topic and find a list of article citations and browse tables-of-contents of journals. Ingenta offers users the opportunity to order copies of articles via fax, download, or email with a fee.

Significant items from over 50 U.S. national and regional newspapers, it includes news articles, reviews, editorials, commentaries, editorial cartoons, and other items. Recordes include concise abstracts.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) physics program produces the most comprehensive set of reliable physical reference data. Originally published by Smithsonian Institution Press, this classic reference source comprises 901 tables of general interest to scientists and engineers, and of particular interest to those involved with physics in its larger sense. All entries in the index are hyperlinked to their page numbers.

The SPIRES (Stanford Public Information Retrieval System) database is managed and maintained by the SLAC (Standford Linear Accelerator Center) library, in cooperation with DESY, FNAL, Kyoto, Durham U, IHEP, KEK, and the HEP community worldwide. It facilitates searching more than 500,000 high-energy physics related articles, including journal papers, preprints, e-prints, technical reports, conference papers and theses, comprehensively indexed by the SLAC and DESY libraries since 1974.

However, unlike other article databases, WorldCat includes very few articles, chapters or papers. These are not covering a journal or subject; only a few in analytics cataloged by libraries are included.
