Comments on "The Impact of
European Culture:" This exhibit provided images very interesting
both visually and conceptually, but the middle image, the Haida one, was black and white.
As in "The Costume Connection," the one black and white photo detracts from the
comparisons to be drawn among the images as a trio. It's really interesting that this
segment chose to examine the significance of outside influences on the art objects,
as opposed to the significance of the objects within the originating community. The
connection between the European influence on the three costumes is explained both in
visual context and in conceptual context, by describing the visual articles in each
costume actually influenced by Europeans in the labels and links. I also liked the title,
though I would have preferred if it acknowledged the artistic component of the exhibit. I
must say that the exhibit is not really well documented, except for the picture
references. There is even a quote in the Yoruba link that does not have the source cited.
The goals stated in the statement of intent, explaining European
influence on the costumes of traditional ceremonies of the three cultures examined, were
successfully achieved. (LD) |
"The Impact of European Culture"
was original in terms of the theme, and I feel that the theme is important to have
included in our class exhibit. After learning how to recognize ethnocentrism and Western
influences (positive and negative), we are reminded by this portion of the exhibit that
these are still important factors when considering this art. This theme was well developed
throughout the labels, and I feel that the images were well-selected as well. (DE) |
"The Impact of European Culture"
was a very poignant concept drawing on a theme of western influence across all three of
these cultures. Western influence is a legitimate influence that can be seen through the
cultures and the exhibit exemplifies this influence by demonstrating through the choice of
images how each culture has been affected. (IP) |
"Impact of European Culture:"
This exhibit was good but it could have had better images. The images from New Guinea and
Yoruba look good together, but the image from the Northwest Coast takes your view away
from the other two images. The links and labels were good and so was the overall
exhibit.(JS) |
The Impact of Western Culture" presents
three images of modern-day ceremonial dress and explains the impact of Western influence
on each. Visually, these images are interesting to consider together, although perhaps a
color photograph of the Northwest Coast button blanket would be more appealing. The images
are connected by the common theme of Western impact and thus are interesting to consider
conceptually. The title and introduction establishes expectations of the label contents,
and the labels fulfill these expectations. The introduction could have used a bit more
detail, however. The quality of the links could be improved as well and used more
extensively. (CS) |
I thought that the images in the segment on
the "Impact of European Culture" were interesting to consider together and were
effective from a conceptual viewpoint. Some good links telling about the cultures
more specifically through the custom exemplified by the costume or even discussing how
"traditions" have modernized from a historical standpoint would have improved
the exhibit. However, the overall segment was really interesting, both to look at and to
read about the symbolism.(AW) |
