The pig festival consists of an extended ritual which is performed by a particular clan. It is in reality a huge fertility ceremony, mounted every twenty years or so. Wahgi men often describe the pig festival as commencing with a decision to examine the number of clan pigs to see if there are sufficient for the ritual. If there are, a cluster of rites to promote pig growth and fertility are performed. This festival is designed to promote the well being of each individual clan. At the end of the festival most of the clan pigs are killed and eaten.   Usually they are offered by the clan members to each other, usually to those who provided some of the adornments for the festival This festival is a big event for the Wahgi people because it happens infrequently.
