The Ijebu region of Yoruba is located along the coast in the southern region of Yorubaland. The Ijebu were masters of trade, their routes following rivers, creeks and lagoon paths. They were also masters of bronze casting and cloth weaving (Drewal, Pemberton & Abiodun, p. 13)). The Ijebu, like most other Yoruba, have a strong tradition of art. Ijebu art was in demand for religious ceremonies, societal ceremonies, as well as ceremonies honoring the king and other authoritative persons in the community. |
