The Asmat people live on the southwest coast of the island of New Guinea. This region is a part of Indonesia currently known as Irian Jaya. This coastal region includes rivers, mangrove swamps, grasslands and forests. The Asmat strongly differentiate men's and women's roles. Men are expected to engage in warfare and headhunting, while women are expected to concentrate on gathering food, village activities, and the raising of children (Corbin 210-211).
