Kwakiutl

The Kwakiutl people live on the northern end of Vancouver Island, as well as the neighboring mainland of British Columbia. Along with a livelihood of hunting and gathering, the Kwakiutl were, and continue to be a sea-faring people. The Kwakiutl way of life is divided into two distinct seasons: the summer, during which life is concentrated around preparations for the long winter season; and the winter, during which villages move inland and life focuses on ceremony rather than subsistence (Corbin pp.42-43).
