Management of advanced manufacturing systems (AMS) has become a pressing issue among domestic manufacturers, especially those who wish to be competitive on a global basis. Consumers are demanding a larger variety of higher-quality, inexpensive products. If a firm is unable to respond to these demands rapidly, its competitiveness will be greatly reduced. One central and necessary path that manufacturersshould follow in response to these demands is the automation of factories with integrated and flexible systems, which will in turn cause a definite impact on the manufacturing planning and control systems. The evolution is not only in manufacturing systems, but in production control models and systems.
