The advent of a dynamic and competitive environment has put pressures on organizations to be able to respond and thrive in an environment of continuous and unanticipated change. The agile enterprise should be designed with this environment in mind. Another characteristic of this dynamic environment is the need for close integration of companies that will join together to fill a need in a given product market. Given that product complexity is also increasing, there is a need to provide a framework that can serve as an enabler for this environment. The conceptual infrastructure and its elements presented in this paper are based on information technology and its capabilities to support the product development life cycle. Information technology will serve as a necessary enabler to help product development become more “agile”. Research and practitioner issues that need to be addressed are also presented in this paper.
