The small town of Sexi, in the northern Andes of Peru, is the location of a fossil forest that dates to the Middle Eocene (~ 39 million years ago). As part of our study of the fossil forest, we made a survey of the plants currently growing in the vicinity of the town and fossil site. This vegetation is a dense evergreen sclerophyllous shrubland/forest with an epiphytic component. Among the important plant species is Dodonea viscosa (chamana), a locally abundant evergreen shrub which gives its name to the fossil forest - El Bosque Petrificado Piedra Chamana. |
